Strong-Drive Structural Wood Screws

Strong-Drive® Structural
Wood Screws

Simpson Strong-Tie has recently added new products and updated existing products to our Strong-Drive SDW structural wood screw product line. The SDW series of structural wood screws are now code-listed and comply with the 2006 and 2009 IBC and IRC. The new Strong-Drive SDWS and SDWH screws provide high-strength alternatives to through-bolting and traditional lag screws. The SDWS is specifically designed for structural wood-to-wood applications, and the
hex-head Strong Drive SDWH screw is designed for structural and general-purpose fastening applications. A video with features and benefits of the SDWS and SDWH is available here. For more information on the product line, visit www.strongtie.com/fasten.

Holdown SelectorNew Holdown Selector Tool

Holdown connectors are typically used to anchor shearwall segments against overturning. The new Holdown Selector is a quick and easy tool that enables customers to select the most effective holdown connector for their job based on type of installation, demand load and the wood species of the post. Depending upon the installation method (pre- or post-concrete placement), the Holdown Selector provides the application, holdown model number and capacity, and the percentage of installed cost based on the specific holdowns recommended. Users will also see the deflection at demand load, minimum post thickness, anchor bolt diameter and the required fastener types for holdown connector installation. Learn More.

Simpson Strong-Tie featured on Today ShowDeck Safety on Today Show

Yesterday, the Today Show featured a segment on the importance of deck safety. The show visited our Tyrell Gilb Research Lab in Stockton, California, to film our side-by-side deck display. Vice President of Engineering Ricardo Arevalo, P.E. used our display to discuss some of the warning signs on an old or improperly built deck and the key connections on a safe, well-built deck, including using screws and bolts to secure the deck ledger to the house. Jonathan AycockFLASH/Simpson Strong-Tie Scholarship Winner

Each academic year, the Federal Alliance for Safe Homes (FLASH) and Simpson Strong-Tie sponsor a scholarship with a specific focus on structural engineering and construction, which is highlighted in StormStruck: A Tale of Two Homes®, an interactive severe weather experience at INNOVENTIONS at Epcot® at the Walt Disney World® Resort. The scholarship recipient for the 2012-2013 academic year is Jonathan Aycock from Goldsboro, NC. With his scholarship, Jonathan will measure how building products, specifically Oriented Strand Board (OSB), perform in real world flood conditions over time. Jonathan graduates from North Carolina State in 2013 with a Master's degree in Forest Biomaterials. Jonathan will be recognized at the 2012 FLASH Annual Conference on Nov. 1-2 in Lake Buena Vista, FL, where he will present his
research findings.
