New — Free Web-Based Deck-Design Software

Our new Deck Planner Software™ enables users to design a stylish and strong deck in just a few clicks. This intuitive and user-friendly software offers rich graphic capabilities and an easy-to-follow, step-by-step menu for designing the size, shape and other features of a custom deck. The web-based Deck Planner Software improves the overall deck-design experience by highlighting critical deck connections and enabling users to select Simpson Strong-Tie connectors and fasteners, along with products from leading deck board manufacturers, including Trex and Fiberon. Once completed, Deck Planner Software generates a comprehensive report including a materials list, permit submittal pages, additional educational literature and various 3D plan views.

How to Comply with OSHA Silica Dust Standards

OSHA has mandated an 80% reduction in jobsite exposure limits for silica dust by September 23, 2017. In response to this, we've designed an online resource page to make it easier to understand and comply with OSHA's silica dust standards. Among its many resources is a downloadable tech bulletin that outlines the OSHA regulations and a detailed table that specifies the various exposure control methods when working with materials containing crystalline silica. Both the tech bulletin and table are available in English and Spanish.

DWP Now Load Rated and Available in More Sizes

The Deck-Drive™ DWP Wood SS screw product line has been expanded to include both trim- and flat-head fasteners in a greater variety of sizes and lengths, making it ideally suited for almost any exterior wood-to-wood fastening application. Available in corrosion-resistant Type 316 and Type 305 stainless steel, the DWP is great for decks, docks, boardwalks and general exterior wood construction where extra weather resistance and long-lasting quality are critical. In addition, the #10, #12 and #14 Deck-Drive DWP Wood SS flat-head screws are now load rated. These structural fasteners have been tested in accordance with ICC-ES acceptance criteria AC233 and are load rated for shear, pull-through and withdrawal resistance.

Supporting Clemson's Wood Utilization + Design Institute

We recently donated $50,000 to the Wood Utilization + Design institute at Clemson University. The institute was established in 2013 to educate, conduct research, and develop technical and design solutions. The Wood Utilization + Design institute is a multidisciplinary entity that brings together engineers, architects, foresters and building industry stakeholders to advance the knowledge and development in wood-based products. A representative from Simpson Strong-Tie will serve on the institute's advisory board and will work to shape the direction of this innovative institute.
