Rebar Development Length Calculator

Rebar Development Length Calculator is a web application that supports the design of post-installed rebar in concrete applications by calculating the necessary tension and compression development lengths required in accordance with ACI 318-19 / ACI 318-14.

Splice Information

Application
Select either Lap Splice or Development Length. Refer to images to the right for further information.
  • A lap splice application should be selected when two pieces of reinforcing bar being overlapped to create a continuous line of rebar.
  • A development length application should be selected when no existing reinforcing bars are being relied upon to transfer the force into the existing concrete.
Splice Class
Lap splices are classified as Class A or B depending on the ratio of ( As, provided ) / ( As, required ) and the maximum percentage of As spliced within the required lap length.

Concrete Information

Concrete Type
Variable Concrete Type
NWC Concrete, Normal-weight
SLW Concrete, Sand-lightweight
ALW Concrete, All-lightweight
Concrete Compressive Strength, f 'c (psi)
Specified compressive strength of concrete,  f 'c (psi), in accordance with ACI 318. Value must be in the range of 2,500 psi to 8,000 psi.

Rebar Information

Rebar Size (#)
Rebar size used to determine nominal diameter of bar, db (in), in accordance with ACI 318.
Rebar Yield Strength, fy (ksi),
Specified yield strength for non-prestressed reinforcement, fy (ksi) in accordance with ACI 318.
Rebar Coating
Sets the factor used to modify development length based on reinforcement coating in accordance with ACI 318.
Rebar Spacing (Center-to-Center), S
Center-to-center spacing of reinforcement bars.
Enter the Rebar Spacing, S (decimal). The value should be within the range of 0.75 in to 9,999 in.

Minimum Clear Cover, Cmin
Input the smallest clear cover of reinforcement (in).
Adhesive Anchor Bar Size Cmin
SET-3G #3 - #6 1.125"
#7 - #11 2.3"
SET-XP #3 - #6 1.5"
#7 - #11 3"
AT-3G #3 - #6 1.1875"
#7 - #9 1.5625"
Enter the Minimum Clear Cover, Cmin (decimal). The value should be within the range of 0.75 in to 9,999 in.

Excess Reinforcement

Per ACI 318, this factor reduces development length by the ratio of (As,required)/(As,provided) for limited circumstances if excess reinforcement is provided. Refer to ACI 318-19 Section 25.4.10 or ACI 318-14 Section 25.4.10 for further explanation. By checking this box, the user is confirming that the use of the ‘Excess Reinforcement Factor’ is permitted per ACI 318-19 Section 25.4.10 or ACI 318-14 Section 25.4.10.
As,required
The default area of steel required is based on the Rebar Size (#) selected.
The value should be within the range of 0.75 in to 9,999 in.

Seismic Design Category

   Seismic Design Category
Classification assigned to a structure based on its occupancy category and the severity of the design earthquake ground motion at the site, as defined by the general building code ACI 318.
Note: For SET-XP and ET-3G in SDC C-F, f'c is limited to 2500psi for calculation purposes only.
