NBC Nightly News Features Simpson Strong-Tie Deck Safety Demo

With more than 500 people injured every year in deck collapses, NBC Nightly News decided to educate America on deck safety with a deck collapse demonstration and an interview with Simpson Strong-Tie structural engineer Scott Fischer.

In the segment featured on Fourth of July, Fischer highlights key weaknesses that plague up to half of all decks in the U.S. and demonstrates what a properly built deck should look like. Watch what happens to a poorly built deck when just a few screws are removed here.

New Underwater Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) Saturant

Simpson Strong-Tie introduces the new Composite Strengthening Systems™ - Underwater Epoxy Saturant (CSS-UES). CSS-UES is a two-component, high-strength, high-modulus epoxy resin system used to saturate our fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) fabrics for wet or submerged applications.

CSS-UES has the ability to cure underwater, thus extending all of the benefits of our FRP strengthening solutions to marine and other environments. Applications include strengthening of concrete or steel piles, columns, beams, slabs, walls, pipes and tanks.

New Training on the 2015 SDPWS

Two new online courses are available to help familiarize structural engineers, designers, and architects with code-compliant diaphragm and shear wall design techniques using the ANSI / AWC 2015 Special Design Provisions for Wind and Seismic (SDPWS).

Diaphragm Design with 2015 SDPWS is a one-hour lesson covering diaphragm behavior and analysis, distribution of diaphragm forces, and blocked versus unblocked diaphragms. Shear Wall Design with 2015 SDPWS is a two-hour lesson that reviews capacity adjustments based on aspect ratio, shear wall design methods, and prefabricated shear walls.

SDPWS

Both courses offer continuing education units (CEUs), and are approved by AIA and ICC for credit. To view a full library of courses that can be taken any time, free of charge, visit strongtie.com/workshops.

Simpson Strong-Tie Aids Disaster Relief for West Virginia Floods

Simpson Strong-Tie announced it has made a $10,000 donation to assist in emergency response and relief efforts following the flash floods that raged through West Virginia in late June.

Several of the hardest-hit counties were declared a federal disaster, and a state of emergency was declared in most of the counties in the state. Numerous homes and businesses were destroyed or severely damaged, forcing several thousand residents to evacuate. The floods tragically resulted in the deaths of 23 people.

Red Cross

The donation from Simpson Strong-Tie was given to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund and is helping in executing emergency response, and providing food, shelter and other assistance to those affected. "Our thoughts go out to everyone caught in these sudden and fast-moving floods," said Simpson Strong-Tie CEO Karen Colonias. "We hope that recovery and relief efforts continue to help residents cope with this devastating ordeal."
